Medina County Park District

A few weeks ago I wrote a letter suggesting that regardless of how strong our political opinions may be in general, they have little to do with how we choose the communities in which we live.

My contention was proximity to our work weighs heavily in our decision, but then come educational opportunities for our children followed by a host of civic, cultural, and entertainment considerations.  And in some cases we may even sacrifice nearness to our work site in favor of even more diverse reasons.

In my own case I was born and raised in Richfield Township in northern Summit County among some of the most beautiful woods of hardwood and pine you would ever see.  As for bountiful crops of corn, wheat, hay, apple and peach orchards, this is how the town got its name.  The early pioneers who settled there named it Richfield for its “rich fields”.  I, as a kid, did not appreciate all this until it was too late, but our town being within 15-20 miles of Akron and Cleveland, developers appreciated it for different reasons.  People of course need to live somewhere.  I am sure they saw some of the beauty I grew up with, but you can’t have both agricultural beauty and suburban growth.  My treasure had disappeared so I migrated to a 44-acre farm in Medina County where I still reside.

I’m sure you have noticed the same thing is happening here.  We are one of the fastest growing counties in Ohio.  There is no stopping it; the beauty of crops, orchards, streams and woodlands is fast disappearing.  We are, however, very fortunate to be blessed with a visionary, dedicated group of people who saw this coming long ago and have saved some of these treasures for the rest of us.

I am speaking of the people of the Medina County Park District; first formed in 1965 and still dedicated today to acquiring land for open space preservation to enhance the quality of the environment, and to preserve unique natural resources for the benefit of the citizens of our county.

There are 16 park sites throughout Medina County (two of them still under development) available for the public’s enjoyment.  There are activities, guided and unguided trails and hikes, and lectures at all times of the year, and picnics and fishing for the kids in the summer.  There are also unlimited opportunities for volunteers.

I have barely scratched the surface of this gem within our midst.  I’m sure the Park District would be as glad to hear from you as they were in mailing information to me.
