"I Had A Dream" by Beth Lawton
Disturbing Interaction with Wasilla Alaska Library
As the President of the Medina County District Library Board, the freedom to read is important to me. I found it disturbing that Governor Palin was involved with a book banning controversy with the Wasilla Alaska Library.
Ms. Anne Kilkenny, a resident of Wasilla, Alaska, has gained her 15 minutes of fame by sending an email to her friends about the pros and cons of Governor Palin. The email was reprinted on the National Public Radio site and is attached as it appeared on that web site1. NPR and the New York Times have interviewed her and confirmed that the email is from her. Ms. Kilkenny stated:
"While Sarah
was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our
highly respected City Librarian because the
Librarian refused to consider removing from the
library some books that Sarah wanted removed.
City residents rallied to the defense of the
City Librarian and against Palin’s attempt at
out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down
and withdrew her termination letter. People who
fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on
her enemies list to this
day."
Time magazine reported the same story and
indicated that the City Librarian later changed
jobs and cities.
Personally, I do not
want a Vice President of the United States who
even considers banning books. This is yet
another reason to work for Senators Obama and
Biden.
Respectfully,
Pat
Walker
Medina, OH
